My daughter and I were shopping for a baby shower gift a few weeks back and had decided to buy the mom-to-be a diaper bag. We stood before a wall literally covered with carry-alls of every style and color, but there was one thing they all had in common. They were huge, practically the size of an ice chest but without the wheels.

“Do you think she’ll want something that big?” I asked as I surveyed the selection before me.

My daughter, the mother of a two-year-old, only laughed. “She’ll probably need two of them at least.”

She went on to explain that today’s diaper bags have to carry so much more than simply diapers. “There are changing pads, and wet wipes and refills for the wet wipes. You have your baby powder so they don’t get diaper rash, and your diaper rash cream for when they do. You have your plastic, non-porous, odor-free plastic bags to hold poopy diapers and the cute little yellow ducky dispenser that hides them discretely out of sight. And if you’re little darling is a boy, well you have to carry little pee-pee tee-pees.”

Apparently the pee-pee tee-pee is a paper cone that fits over the little male’s pee spouter to prevent unfortunate accidents. If you run out, you can also use traditional snow cone cups.

“Then of course,” she continued.”You have to have room for pacifiers, bottles and milk.”

“I thought she was breast feeding,” I said.

“Expressed milk for those times when you need someone else to feed the baby, and a large wire-framed cover up blanket for when you do it yourself.”

I was beginning to get the picture.

“Then of course there are the clothes. I always carry at least three complete outfits from socks and t-shirts to coats and hats, four if I’ll be gone longer than an hour. You’d be amazed at the multiple ways an infant can find to soil a set of clothing.”

I took a deep breath and tried to concentrate.

“There are the incidentals like baby pain reliever and allergy medicine, a first aid kit, syrup of ipecac, tweezers and a thermometer. A variety of small toys and books, preferably educational in nature, and I always carry a notepad with emergency numbers and medical history for the little guy… just in case.”

My eyes were starting to glaze over.

“Now that he’s bigger, I have to include a box of rice cereal and those bland apple snacks that taste like Styrofoam. And unless I like driving down the highway with a screaming toddler, I can’t forget the portable DVD player and a selection of Elmo videos.”

“Wow,” I said. “What a collection. No wonder the bags have to be so big.”

“But you know what’s really frightening,” my daughter asked, her eyes big and her voice dramatic. “She’s having twins.”

I’ve never been so happy to be menopausal in my life.

I grew up in North Alabama, so a good size snowfall didn’t just come along every day. In the summertime there was nothing better than a Sunday afternoon in which we made homemade ice cream. During the winter months, one of the great gifts of a good snowfall was a big bowl of snow cream. We could usually count on one or two batches per year. Mama would send us out into the snow and we’d come back with a roasting pan heaped high with fluffy fresh snow. It is best to get the snow from the very top layer while it is still falling, but we’ve been known to harvest good clean snow from any place we could find it. Anyway, if you’re looking for a wonderful, fresh winter treat, a bowl full of snow cream is heavenly.

Here’s how to make it. You will need the following:

1 large metal pan

2 cups of sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 can Eagle Brand milk

2 eggs (you may omit these if you are skittish about using raw eggs)

In a large mixing bowl, mix all ingredients except snow. Send the heartiest of the crew out into the snow with a large metal pan such as a roaster or a big soup pot or two. If you have the foresight, set the metal pans outside a couple of hours before you plan to make the snow cream. If the pans are frozen, obviously the snow will stay frozen longer.

Fold in large amounts of snow with the mixture of sugar, milk, eggs, and vanilla. Do not stir too rapidly or too vigorously. As you fold the snow in (it may take a gallon or two), stir gently until all ingredients are well mixed. Pour immediately into bowls, refrigerated ones if you thought of it. You will have a great treat that tastes a lot like ice cream but cost you almost nothing, and you’ll have the added benefit of having created a wonderful memory for your children and grandchildren, who will probably Google this subject 15 years from now when they start reminiscing at Christmas time. With any luck they’ll find this article and make their own snow cream and memories. Have a happy winter!

Cakes are one of the favorite desserts of people of all ages. It is always present in various kinds of gatherings. Some cakes are traditionally eaten in special occasions such as at Christmas Eve. Others can be eaten with different toppings and are available in a variety of forms.

Some delicious gourmet cakes:

The Carrot Cake

Carrot is the main ingredient of a carrot cake and consists of large amounts of sugar like sugar beets. It was used during the medieval age as sweet ingredient in sweet cake. The carrot cake is a sweet gourmet cake prepared through the mixture of grated carrot and butter. The process of cooking results to soft carrot and the cake has dense and soft texture. The carrots themselves improve and add to the appearance, texture, and flavor of the cake.

You could add ingredients to your carrot cake to make it more personal, depending on your taste buds. You could sprinkle it with raisins, nuts, coconut or pineapple.

The serving of carrot cake may be either plain, with glazed or topped with white icing. It can also be served topped with cream cheese icing and chopped walnuts.

A carrot cake with cream cheese icing is listed as number five on the top five fad foods of the 1970s according to the American-based Food Network in 2005. And carrot cakes are available in different forms such as sheet cake, cupcake, and loaf form. They are popular in the United States and in the United Kingdom.

The Christmas cake

Christmas cake is actually a fruit cake popular in Ireland, Japan, Philippines, United Kingdom, and other countries under the commonwealth. People in these countries normally give out fruit cakes as presents during the holiday season.

Christmas cake has several types. There are spongy to heavy, crumbly-moist to sticky-wet, light to dark and spongy to heavy. Some are leavened or unleavened, square or oblong, round shape, fairy cakes, dusting with icing sugar and more.

The Scottish Christmas cake is called Whisky Dundee and is a most loved traditional Christmas cake. It is made with Scotch whisky and feels crumbly and light on the palate. It has candied peesl and light fruits such as sultanas, cherries, currents and raisins. This cake is loved by those who are not fond of moist and very rich textured cakes.

Another Christmas cake is the apple crème Christmas cake. It particularly consists of rich mix of finely sliced apples. It is usually mixed with raisins and other fruit. It also has cream cheese, heavy whipping cream, and eggs.

Christmas cake in certain occasion is even added with coins as touch pieces for good luck. The coins may be 3d piece, silver, or six pences wrapped in grease proof paper packages.

The Wacky Cake

It was believed that Beatrice Fe O’Hearn was the inventor of the wacky cake recipe. The recipe was passed down to generations among her family and friends. The cake has been a favorite delicacy in many rural areas of the United States since in the late 1930s.

The wacky cake has spongy texture and cocoa based. This cake is unique in a sense that it does not contain eggs and milk unlike the other common cake and pastries. It has active ingredients such as cocoa powder, flour, baking soda, sugar, vanilla extract, vegetable oil, and white vinegar. You can also add brewed coffee. And wacky cake may be served plain or with toppings like confectioner’s sugar and icing.

A basic wacky cake recipe has cocoa, flour, baking soda, sugar, salt, vanilla, vegetable oil, vinegar and water.

The Chocolate Cake

Chocolate cakes are absolutely one of the all time favorites. There is a big selection of chocolate cakes, with varying ingredients. An important element in a chocolate cake is the intensity of chocolate, especially in devil’s food cake.

In the United States, the most common type of chocolate cake is the butter cake. The European chocolate Génoise Cake has a spongy texture with minimal amounts of fat. Other types include the flowerless chocolate cake and red velvet cake.

And the common butter cake recipe has ingredients of cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, flour, milk, sugar, salt, eggs, butter or oil, and water. Other additional ingredients are fruit juices, sour cream, syrups and melted chocolate for devil’s food cake.

Ingredients such as liqueurs, vanilla extracts, or liquid flavor i.e. coffee are used by many bakers to enhance and bring out different properties in the chocolate flavor. Also, numerous professional chefs and bakers have experimented unique flavors to chocolate cakes. Some examples of chocolate cakes with flavor combinations include Black Forest gateau, Bûche de Noël, and German Chocolate Cake.

There are several differences between fondant and candy clay that are important to know before you start interchanging them in your cake and cookie designs.

Fondant can be made at home using simple to make ingredients. This is great because you can control what goes into it and coordinate your extract flavor with the cakes or cookies. This homemade fondant can be used immediately or have to sit overnight depending on the specific recipe. Some people find homemade fondant hard to Working with the mixture of all parties and prefer to buy ready-made. There are many different types of fondant on the market. Check Fondarific, Satin Ice fondant new Gifts & Duff Goldman. Most of these stores or cake decorating fondant can be purchased online. Dark Duff is exclusively sold to Michael. Because of the difference between the price and taste, you should go to the forums on Cake Central Cake or cakes we bake, and an online search, I know you can read thatDiscussions on this topic. Go to company websites as well. There are some who send samples for a small fee.

Not like the taste of fondant? Use concentrated flavors (extracts) not to make your cake. A bit 'goes a long way to invest so little in the pipette, a bit' to get a date.

Want to make use of dark, a figure? You must use a 50/50 gumpaste with fondant, because the mixture is made fondant too soft on his own, to keep the shape. You can also use a little 'Tylose to stiffen your fondant using this for the numbers. The flux must rest for several hours, so do Tylose their work. Keep locked, and another away from your fondant.

Candy Clay is delicious and can be done with candy melts and place of corn syrup. This turns into a ball of clay for 24 hours before you need a rest. Some decorators suggest "milk" to remove the tone for most of its oil from it. This is a long process can beextremely chaotic. They are basically all the oil from soaking clay with paper towels. Do not use gauze. Candy sticks to the clay and wants to stay.

Candy Clay must be divided into small pieces and knead gently to smooth. Overknead or not, the oils in it and raise a piece of clay you can not use. Practice mixing and then roll it out, how it works before the project used. You can use it to create figuresdies and molds in candy.

to remember two important differences: 1) Do not use Crisco on your candy clay. Makes it shiny. Crisco can be used on your fondant paste or gel colors to mix easily without dying hands. 2) can be attenuated dark disk with a microwave in short bursts until it is smooth. Do not try this with your sweet sound. Not working.

Food intolerance related conditions are widespread according to a number of the UK’s leading nutritionists. Unlike allergies which provoke immediate reactions when sufferers eat problem foods, food intolerances cause a delayed reaction. This means that without food intolerance testing, it is practically impossibly to identify the food that is making you feel unwell.

As a result, many people suffer from symptoms such as migraines, abdominal pains and asthma for years before taking a food intolerance test to discover the cause of their problems.

Food intolerance testing is much easier (and more pleasant) than the other measures people take to try and understand what is making them feel ill.

Food intolerance testing involves taking a tiny sample of blood and sending it to a laboratory for analysis. If the sample comes back positive for a food intolerance, you can then take another test to identify the exact food intolerance that you have. These tests allow to you to check for intolerances to up to 113 different types of food.

If food intolerance testing reveals that you have an intolerance to a particular type of food you should take advice about how to adjust your diet. This is because if you have an intolerance to various different types of food it can be harmful to suddenly stop eating them altogether.

Furthermore, depending on your level of intolerance, you might find that you can still eat the problem food, just much less frequently than you used to. For instance, one of my clients discovered that he had an intolerance to yeast via food intolerance testing. This meant that he had to cut out beer altogether for a year but was then able to gradually re-introduce it to his diet.

Identifying problem foods by undergoing food intolerance testing can significantly enhance your sense of well being. However, food intolerance testing is not a cure all. Instead it should be undertaken alongside other attempts to live a healthy lifestyle; such as taking regular exercise.

Comfort And Courtesy

The cliché of the waiting area is comprised of uncomfortable chairs, out of date magazines, and money hungry vending machines. Does your waiting area fit the stereotype? If so, it may be time for a change.

With a little thoughtfulness and effort, you can provide your valued customers with comfortable seating, up-to-date reading materials and the pleasure of enjoying free, freshly popped popcorn from your very own popcorn machine. The traditional red and white striped bags, popcorn kernels, and toppings are very inexpensive and easy to provide in these self-service popcorn machines.

A coffee maker and a water cooler standing nearby can provide for the beverage needs of your customers as they wait comfortably and contentedly in your waiting room, nibbling freshly popped popcorn.

Businesses Best Suited To This Type Of Customer Satisfaction

Sitting for any length of time can give your customers the time they need to think of why they wish they were somewhere else or whether or not they could have gotten your product or service online or some other way, especially in light of today’s busy schedules. Customers who must bring their children with them will be especially grateful for the entertainment value a popcorn machine can provide. In fact, your other customers will probably be equally grateful…

Any business that has a waiting area can garner the benefits of a complimentary popcorn machine for their customers. Automobile, boat and motorcycle service shops, beauty salons, print shops, book stores, doctors’ offices, financial institutions, and laundromats can all increase their customer satisfaction with a popcorn machine. Saloons and bars can benefit even more with the thirst factor that occurs whenever people eat salty snacks such as those created by your popcorn machine.

Customer satisfaction can make or break a business. Every little step you can take to ensure that your customers are satisfied and happy to return will be yet one more step toward your financial success. If your place of business has special sales or promotional events, you can up the ante and the attraction with a cotton candy machine and a snow cone machine. Potential customers who stop by for a “quick look” end up staying longer and buying more when they are provided with these simple and inexpensive treats.

Tanzania is most famous for the vast Serengeti National Park, stretching out for almost 13,00sq kms.But there is so much more to this most fascinating country. Ngorongoro Crater, a World Heritage Site, is home to a host of wildlife that make the crater floor their habitat. Tanzania’s Rift Valley features the popular Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Parks. Ruaha and the Selous in the southern part of Tanzania are spectacular, with abundant game. To the coast, the ‘ spice island’ of Zanzibar is well worth visiting. Possibly the most well known sight is the snow capped tip of Mt Kilimanjaro

Lake Manyara National Park

Set around the lake, this park lies at the foot of a dramatic escarpment and offers a rich diversity of scenery and wildlife, including the famous tree lions a very high density of elephant population and other big game. Its lake is a haven for birdlife and hippo.

Ngorongoro Crater

A wonder of the world set in the African Wild. Ngorongoro was an active volcano some 8 million years ago whose cone collapsed leaving a sunken caldera of 311sq km, rendering it into one of the largest craters in the world. The magic stems forms its sheer physical beauty and stunning panoply of wildlife that roam its floor. The 2000ft descent into the crater reveals a sight of unequalled glamour.

Serengeti National Park

This park contains the most spectacular wildlife sight in the annual migration of the wildebeest from the north to the south. Amongst its 35 species of, it is famous for the black maned lion, of which there are over 2000, and other predators such as cheetah, hyena, and wild dogs.

Olduvai Gorge

Between Ngororngoro Crater and Serengeti national Park lies Olduvai Gorge, ” the cradle of mankind”. Here, Dr Leakey and his wife discovered one of the earliest fossils of man, some 1.7 million years old. Many of their finds are now displayed in a museum overlooking the Gorge

Tarangire National Park

The only place in Tanzania where you can view fringe -eared Oryx easily, and during the dry season the river attracts a large concentration of ungulates. Other big game are plentiful and include elephant, buffalo, lion, and the rare Greater Kudu.

Zanzibar-The Spice Island

This island on Tanzania’s north coast has lured travelers for centuries, and it was the influence of the Shirazi Persians and the Omani Arabs that has lingered mostly on the island. Known as the spice Island and the largest producer of cloves, Zanzibar’s east coast beaches are superb you can explore the spice and fruit plantations and visit Jozani Forest.

Best of all is the old stone town of Zanzibar. It’s a cluster of winding streets lined with whitewashed coral houses, bazaars, mosques, fortresses, two former sultan’s palaces, two huge cathedrals and faded colonial mansions all vividly evoking the islands long history. Zanzibar best known as the ’spice island’ was the centre for the slave trade in East Africa and base for David Living stone’s expeditions into the unexplored African interior. Smell full of the aroma of cloves and other spices, which still provide a livelihood for many people of Zanzibar.

Zanzibar Prison island tour.

Also known as ‘Prison Island’, it’s the most famous of the offshore islands. This island was once owned by an Arab who used it for rebellious slaves. Later it was sold to general Mathews who converted it into a prison. However it has never been used as such. The island is also home to giant tortoises which are supposed to have been brought over from Aldabra – an Atoll off the Seychelles. The small beach disappears at high tide, but it is superb to swim in the crystal clear water with splendid coral reefs. The island itself is well-forested, nice for a walk, an ideal place for a day trip. Jozani forest is a small National Park centrally located on the island. It is the last remaining sanctuary for the Red Colobus Monkey.

Here’s a Thanksgiving Feast Everyone Can Enjoy

I come from a big food loving family, and for me, Thanksgiving Day is a day of thanks, always spent with friends and family, and, of course, lots of great food!

But for many families (including mine) that have friends or family members with diabetes (such as my father), those on weight loss programs (such as my sister), or those who simply want to eat more healthfully, the traditional Thanksgiving meal is laden with fat, calories and carbohydrates and can be as difficult as it is joyful.

The great news is that with a little bit of extra care, it’s easy to create a traditional Thanksgiving menu that everybody can enjoy. This holiday, I offer you a variety of my favorite tips and recipes that you can mix-n-match with your own family traditions to create a relaxed holiday for which everyone will be thankful.

Happy holidays to your family from mine. – Marlene

Appetizers

Be sure to dish up plenty of fresh veggies and low-fat dressings like Classic Spinach Dip.
Add a platter of chilled cooked shrimp, low-fat cheeses, or homemade deviled eggs (made with reduced-fat mayonnaise) to your appetizer table. They are all filling, protein rich, and virtually free of carbohydrates.
Make sure to have plenty of diet beverages or sparkling water dressed with fresh wedges of lemon and lime on hand for you and your guests.

Sides

Add an extra non-starchy vegetable and a big salad to your menu (and be sure to pile them on your plate). If a guest, offer to bring a healthy salad or colorful vegetable dish rather than another starch or dessert.
Traditional cranberry sauce is very high in sugar. Check out the Diet and Nutrition section of Destination Diabetes for a fabulous low-sugar cranberry sauce recipe.
Substitute wholegrain croutons, add extra vegetables and/or swap-out some of the butter for broth to create a stuffing perfect for everyone. (On a personal note: be sure to set a budget for your own must-have starchy side dishes and forgo the rest).
Be adventurous and try a new lighter version of an old favorite. Ditch sweet potatoes topped with brown sugar or marshmallows for Sweet Potatoes with Apple Cider Syrup.

Sweet Endings

Add fresh sliced pears and apples or grapes with reduced-fat cheeses and nuts to your usual dessert menu.
Use sugar substitutes or a combination of sugar and sugar substitutes (like Splenda Sugar for Baking) to reduce the sugar in your favorite pie recipes.
Or try one of these guilt-free sweet endings; Pumpkin Custard Cups, Creamy Instant Pumpkin Mousse, Paper Bag Apple Pie.

When you think gourmet foods what comes to your mind? Expensive, only available in the top restaurants of the world presented in unique design by men that speak with accents wearing tuxes? The truth is that they are not as expensive as you think, they do not need a culinary master to be prepared and they do not take as much time as you may believe.

Gourmet foods can appeal to all the senses. Taste, touch, sight, and sound. Finer gourmet foods when beautifully presented and carefully tasted can equal the experience of seeing an original piece of a masters work of art. The aroma that lingers in the air and the beauty in the way it was arranged can be worth the price that some of the finest restraunts may charge. Only high quality food and drink will suffice for those that consider food to be a delicacy and treasure.

With that being said, how does a person go about selecting everyday foods from the local market and preparing them at home to equal those prepared by a world renown chef? I completely believe that preparing gourmet meals at home for yourself, several times a week, is possible and not saved for those times when special dinners are required for guests while entertaining. Where to shop for gourmet foods? That depends on where you live. Gourmet quality items can be found at your local grocery or farmers market, it just takes some looking. There are some areas that have specialty stores or gourmet shops. Remember, I said it doesn’t have to be expensive to be gourmet it has to be high quality.

So you are going to look for foods that look good, are high quality and are fresh. You want foods that are not processed or packaged and in most cases have not been treated with pesticides and such. Pick the freshest foods if at all possible. If fresh foods are not an option some frozen varieties are acceptable but never use canned. You know the difference in quality foods when you see them. They are usually the foods that are packaged attractively and displayed in a way that makes you want to buy them. You are consuming it, it should be high quality.

If you are not sure how to go through the grocery and pick out the high quality foods, then you can turn to the internet. There are many quality gourmet shops online. If you are going to use the online approach to gourmet food shopping I recommend making a list of what you are looking for. Once you have that list you will want to find the better sites that offer the best foods. Places such as Amazon.com can help you locate the foods you are looking for and offers you a simpl way to price compare.

Price compare, paying more doesn’t mean that you are getting better quality of food. The quality of the food is not always revealed in the price tag. I have been to restaurants and had a filet mignon and paid an insane amount of money for a steak and then gone to a chain restaurant and had a filet that was ten times better and cost 1/3 of the “fine restaurants” filet.

Shopping for the good gourmet foods takes time. It can be an enjoyable time. Planning ahead and getting bargins by watching for coupons in your local paper is also wise. Instead of taking a long county drive on a Saturday, try visiting one or two local markets browsing up and down the isle looking for special food items to create a gourmet meal. Eating should be an enjoyable and rewarding experience, so take the time to prepare your gourmet meals.

Pomegranate juice has grown in popularity over the past few years due to the many health benefits it provides. Several studies have proven that drinking Pomegranate Juice destroy breast cancer cells and even stop breast cancer cells from forming. Studies done with mice show that drinking this juice can inhibit the development of lung cancer. The juice of the pomegranate is also known to slow the growth of prostate cancer. It also is believed to prevent cartilage deterioration that is the leading cause of osteoarthritis.

Pure Pomegranate juice is the most beneficial and by drinking it on a regular basis, it may prevent and slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. The juice in its purest form also has been shown to lower systolic blood pressure by as much as five percent.

The pomegranate is an ancient fruit that has been grown in the Mediterranean for thousands of years. Surprisingly, the Pomegranate never became popular in the United States as it was considered exotic and was mainly purchased by immigrants and by Americans who found out about it will traveling abroad. The emergence of information in the U.S. that announced the anti-carcinogenic properties of the pomegranate changed all of that rather quickly.

Soon, everyone wanted natural Pomegranate juice and it began to appear on store shelves across the country. Most of the Pomegranate juice that is sold in the United States comes from California where the fruit is grown, picked and juiced. As more and more Americans are searching for ’superfoods’, consumers have embraced Pomegranate in record numbers. The benefits of this juice are creating waves in the health and fitness markets and many people are turning to it as the newest and most popular beverage to have on hand.

Pomegranates adds color and flavor to a wide variety of food types, including salads, entrees and desserts. Pomegranate tastes delicious when it is sweetened. A syrup can be made by reducing the sweetened juice. Unsweetened juice gives drinks, sauces, dressings and desserts a tart flavor and adds color.

No matter if you purchase the juice that comes from California or if you buy it that comes from pomegranates that have been cultivated in the Mediterranean, the health benefits of pomegranate juice are as sweet as the deep red seeds that are nestled in the fruit.

You can find pure and natural Pomegranate juice at health food and grocery stores as well as online. You can also make the juice at home, but be warned that pomegranate does stain so take any necessary precautions to prevent that from happening.
